History of the Morning Glories of Russet Woods Garden Club

Hoover homeowner Kathy Morris of Russet Woods contacted the Birmingham Botanical Gardens and asked for advice. She and a few neighbors had the desire to create a garden club larger and more active than they knew how to manage. A club which could accommodate a growing community and participate in and utilize information from other garden club resources in addition to their own. Kathy was referred to the 1987 President of the Shades Valley Council of Garden Clubs and a lifetime member of the Garden club of Alabama. She visited Kathy and the Russet Woods fledgling garden club. She used her garden club expertise and organizational skills to help a community interested in learning more about gardening to become state and nationally affiliated.

Since that neighborhood meeting in 1987 this garden club has grown to as many as thirty members at one time and has indeed fulfilled its primary goal of neighborhood involvement and education in not only gardening, but environmental concerns, beautification, etc. Many awards have been given to the club from simple thank you's for the development's entrance plantings maintained seasonally and roadside wildflowers to top-placing ribbons for flower shows and other various state and national awards.
